CLEAN Members and Allies

The Community-Labor-Environmental Action Network was created to educate the public and build support for the Carwash Workers Organizing Committee, or CWOC. CLEAN is a diverse coalition of labor, immigrant rights, religious, environmental, and community organizations.

Community Allies and Solidarity Work

The CLEAN campaign is a radical departure from that approach.  It includes the community as a strategic partner.  Specifically, the campaign is directed by a Steering Committee (composed of representatives of USW, the UCLA Downtown Labor Center, a worker center (Maintenance Cooperation Trust Fund, MCTF) and the AFL-CIO) and a Community Advisory Board (CAB).

The CAB is made up of many of the organizations that advocate for immigrant workers in Los Angeles, including: Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice (CLUE), the Korea-town Immigrant Worker Association (KIWA), Instituto de Educacion Popular del Sur the California (IDEPSCA), the National Immigration Law Center (NILC), American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health (COSH), Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), Strategic Concepts in Organizing and Policy Education (SCOPE), Enlace and the Wage Justice Center.   The CAB meets at least once a month to provide strategic feedback and advice to the campaign in place.

The campaign is also experimenting with new kinds of community partnerships.  For example, the campaign has partnered with St. John’s Well Child and Family Center to secure improved access to health care for carwash workers and their families, and for low-income communities in general.  St. John’s provides free and expedited health care services to carwash workers and their families, which is significant because carwash workers use toxic chemicals on a daily basis in their workplaces.
